Chapter 13

H’s knuckles were white as he clutched the steering wheel, meandering along the city streets on his way to the country road that would take us back to Branden Bay. I could hear the blood whoosh through my ears. I didn’t want to tell him everything I’d been up to – not all of the details.

“I’m sorry about this evening. I ruined it for you. It was lovely food and the band looked great – it would have been a fun party.” I bit my lip.

“Don’t worry about that. I’m concerned about you, Becky. What’s going on?” He glanced at me, then ahead as we hit the country road, his arms outstretched on the wheel.

“I didn’t eat anything all day and was dizzy earlier. I’m not ill or anything.”

“You seemed to be having some sort of panic attack, as if you were shocked or scared by something.”

“No – just lack of food.”

“You own a café and you don’t eat?” H shook his head. “What was it you wanted to tell me? I can guess it’s to do with Hart. Seems you’re not the only one who thinks it may have been murder.”

“I wondered if Nick Pope did it.” I wasn’t going to confess that I’d mistakenly thought an award-winning policeman was the murderer.

“How did you know of Nick Pope?”

“I saw him at the funeral.”

“So you were snooping around at the funeral? What about this poem Brad referred to?”

I groaned. “Don’t remind me. I wanted to get a good look at who was there. I couldn’t see over Izzy’s hat so I found myself at the pulpit. I had to make something up on the spot.”

“Izzy? I didn’t know she knew Hart?”

“Izzy knows everyone.” I didn’t want him to know I’d roped her in on my investigation.

“So, tell me about your feelings on the case.”

I couldn’t tell H that I’d seen Robert’s ghost – he was a non-believer of anything supernatural. A logical guy where only things you could see, smell and touch existed. “I had a hunch.”

“You’re not using your so-called powers, are you?”

“You know I can’t stand that type of thing,” I said truthfully. “It creeps me out.”

“What was it you wanted to tell me, seeing as Pope is dead?” he asked.

I fished out my mobile phone, I had to show him something, otherwise he’d be on my case too long and I didn’t want to admit I’d been active – really active on this case. I flicked through my photos until I got to the selfie of me with the mourners in the background. “I have a hunch that the killer is in this photo,” I said as I flashed him my screen.

“I’ll take a look at it when we get back to your place.”
